Congratulations to our Australia Day Honours recipients

We would like to congratulate the members of the Human Rights Law Centre community who have been recognised and awarded in the 2019 Australia Day Honours.

Anna Brown OAM, CEO of Equality Australia and formerly the Director of Legal Advocacy at the Human Rights Law Centre. Anna played a critical role as Co-Chair of the Equality Campaign in the successful national campaign for marriage equality and has been a leading voice for human rights.

Anna also played a leading role in the High Court challenge to the postal survey (M106) and the test case for transgender rights (Re Kelvin), as well strategic litigation to advance marriage equality (Cth v ACT) and recognise sex and gender diversity (Norrie’s case). Anna’s advocacy was pivotal in securing federal LGBTI discrimination protections in 2013 and laws across Australia to erase historical convictions for homosexual offences for gay and bisexual men.

Jamie Gardiner OAM, Vice-President at Liberty Victoria and long-serving board member at the Human Rights Law Centre. Jamie's advocacy and policy work has played a crucial role in significant law reform in Victoria and beyond for 45 years. From decriminalisation of homosexuality to anti-discrimination protections, Jamie's tireless public advocacy, thoughtful policy work and principled leadership influenced and secured lasting legal change.

Jamie has also advanced LGBTI equality through service as Vice-President of Liberty Victoria, as a member of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Human Rights and Charter of Rights Committees, adviser to the Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby and through the ALP LGBTI policy committee.

David Krasnostein AM. David played a key role in the establishment of the Human Rights Law Centre and was our Inaugural Chair, a position he held from 2005-2007.

Jon Webster AM. Jon has served on the Human Rights Law Centre board since 2012 and has provided significant pro bono support to the centre and other not-for-profit organisations through his role as a Partner and now Consultant at Allens.

The Human Rights Law Centre also congratulates Krystyna Campbell Pretty AM and Matt Collins AM QC who are important supporters of our work.
