Nick Espie joins the Human Rights Law Centre

We’re thrilled to announce that Nick Espie has joined the Centre as a Legal Director leading the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights team, commencing in 2022. Nick is an Arrernte man who has around two decades of legal practice and policy experience working on Aboriginal justice issues.

Nick is based in Darwin and has worked extensively throughout the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. He has held management roles with the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency and the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia.

He was the Director of Community Engagement for the Royal Commission into the Detention and Protection of Children in the Northern Territory and worked as a Legislative Reform Manager in the Northern Territory Government on child protection and youth justice reforms. Nick has also served as a board member of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency.

Nick will lead and manage the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights team’s work advocating in close partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and organisations for a fair legal system that is free from racial injustice and that upholds the principles of dignity, equality and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ right to self-determination.
