Alice Drury - Acting Legal Director

Alice joined the Human Rights Law Centre in 2018. Alice works on systemic and emerging threats to Australian democracy, such as getting big money out of politics and putting an end to mass surveillance.

Prior to joining the Human Rights Law Centr, Alice was the Legal Director of GetUp. Alice worked across varied campaign areas including human rights, income inequality and environmental justice, but her primary focus was on democratic freedoms, electoral law reform and increased government accountability. She also has first-hand experience in responding to government interference with civil society, having defended the high-profile activist organisation at a time of significant government pressure.

At the State Solicitor’s Office of Western Australia, Alice assisted the State Solicitor and Solicitor General on a number of constitutional matters before the High Court, in particular concerning the implied freedom of political communication. She then went on to practice in public law and commercial litigation as a lawyer at national firm Clayton Utz.

Alice broadened her studies beyond the law with a Masters in Iranian Studies from Tehran University, focusing on matters of government and media reporting in the Middle East. She also conducted research for and published with the Lowy Institute.

Alice graduated from Arts/Law with Honours at the University of Western Australia.
